Let’s take a moment and think about our life as a river. For some reason, we think what we want or need is upstream, against the current. And to get what we want, we have to constantly paddle, work hard, and burn ourselves out trying to keep up with whatever it is we’re trying to keep up with. Maybe we even forgot what target we’re trying to reach, or that target has changed. What if, instead of constantly trying to paddle upstream (and unable to enjoy the scenery), we pull up those oars and let that boat turnaround and start heading downstream.
What if what we actually want is downstream? Wouldn’t it be easier, more pleasurable, and more enjoyable if we practiced going with the flow more often?
There will always be tricky spots that we have to “paddle around” in order to navigate different demands and difficult times in our lives, but those should be followed by time to recharge and relax while we let this river of life just carry us downstream.
Let’s check in:
- Are you living life the hard way, by trying to paddle upstream and missing the beautiful scenery around you?
- Or are you choosing the easier, smoother more enjoyable way of letting the stream carry you downriver?
I’m here to tell you: you can go with the flow and still get what you want and be successful.
So take a moment to close your eyes, breathe deeply, and visualize pulling up your oars. Think about where you’re paddling and refocus as you let your boat turn around and head downstream. Now, you can put those oars back in any time to navigate the currents or ride the momentum, but be sure to take time to look around, enjoy the scenery and pull them out along the way so you can relax, recharge as you go with the flow.
